Swimming Pool Leak Detection

How to Detect A Swimming Pool Leak
It’s hard to keep water in a pool. Every swimming pool, spa, or landscape pond is probably going to start leaking at some point in its useful life. These pesky problems can be more than just an inconvenience. If I asked you to empty and refill your pool 3 times this year would you do it? If your pool is dropping by 1cm every day then it only takes 24 days to drop 24 cm with the average depth of 120cm how long until your pool is empty ? An un-repaired hole the size of a pencil tip can result in hundreds of gallons of water lost per day. In addition to the replacement cost of the water, leaks in your pool will increase chemical demands, and may lead to more serious structural and mechanical problems. Fortunately, effective leak location and leak repair solutions are available

By far the most common indication of a leak is that the water level is dropping faster than what is normally attributable to evaporation or splash-out. Often leaks are big enough that excess water loss is obvious. If you wake-up to find that your pool has dropped several inches overnight you know you’ve got a problem. The bigger challenges are the smaller, yet just as serious, leaks that may develop slowly. In these cases it is important to determine what is “normal water loss” and thus avoid wasting time looking for and worrying about a leak that really isn’t there. Our free to borrow check a leak system allows you to determine if you have leak or it is just evaporation.

The first thing you notice is you may be topping up your pool water more than normal, this could be for many different reasons, for example the weather and heavy usage of the pool. So we suggest you do a test to see if it is leaking or evaporation. This is called the bucket test but if you come into the showroom we can lend you the check-a-leak system, this measures evaporation and if the pool has a leak.

If the check-a-leak determines you are leaking water the next stage is to call us out to determine where the leak is, we pressure test the lines and then use our probe to test the vinyl and pin point the leak for you if you have a tiled or painted pool we can locate the leak with our underwater sound test equipment. We also have underwater cameras to determine the location and severity of the leak.
